Training & Competencies

First Responders are competent in:

• Advanced first aid and basic life support;
• Oxygen therapy;
• The use of an automatic external defibrillator;
• QAS radio and telephone communication procedures;
• Familiarisation with the vehicles that comprise the local stations fleet;
• Lifting and loading techniques; and
• Use of Cervical Collars.

Our training includes regular 'Ride Along' shifts in Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) ambulances, attending genuine incidents. These are essential to consolidate, refresh and hone our skills in emergency incidents and first aid procedures, as well as bond our working relationship with QAS Paramedics.

Additional training is expected to be provided in:

• Knowledge of specified QAS Clinical Procedures;
• Kendrick Extrication Devise and Scoop Stretcher;
• QAS Ambulance Report Form & other specific documentation;
• Familiarisation with QAS vehicles; and
• Other procedures the QAS may from time to time deem appropriate.

Equipment

Each on-call First Responder is equipped with a QAS pager, mobile telephone, and portable radio for dispatch and communication with QAS. They also carry the following specialist first aid equipment to provide patient care:

• Oxygen therapy with OP airways;
• Automatic external defibrillator;
• Fully stocked first aid/trauma kit;
• Pain relief; and
• Safety and personal protective equipment including amber beacons and vehicle signage.

Samford First Responders wear similar uniforms to QAS paramedics, with QAS First Responder on the back. QAS First Responders may also wear highly reflective safety over-vests.
